Yesterday Room 3 went to the hall to do 'Tread Lightly.' We learnt that when rubbish gets into the ocean, the fish can't swim! We also learned about the landfill and that the rubbish gets older. I got to plant my seeds and look at worms and lots of bugs.

All about spiders!

Easy Blog Photo

My favourite piece of writing:

A spider is an arachnid. It has an abdomen. It has a head. It has a thorax. It lives in houses. It lives in bush walks. It catches flies. A moth is an insect. It has dull wings. It's antennae look like feathers. Moths wake up in the night and moths go to sleep in the day. Moths have triangle wings. A moth starts as a cocoon. A millipede has more than 14 legs. It crawls really fast along the ground. It has a hard shell - Ria

Getwise Financial Literacy Lesson

As a part of Mathsweek, we had a special visit from Serena the Superhero from ASB who is a Super saver. She helped all the students to know the value of different coins and notes.

She also taught the children the difference between needs (things we need to survive like water food and electricity); and wants (things we do not need to survive like games and toys and fancy clothes). Sarah got to play a special acting role and decide which money she saved, and which money she spent.

We learnt a valuable rhyme to help us remember:
Speed to your needs
and
Wait for your wants.

Now all the students in Room 3 have the power to be Super savers too.
Thanks Serena.

Lochlin was showing off his clever addition skills as he played "Square bricks" during Mathsweek.
All week we have been doing special math challenges, and exploring with the games and activities on the temporary site at mathsweek.org.nz.

If you get a chance, check it out and have a go at some of the fun numeracy programmes.

Sarah's Information report on butterflies

Sarah shared lots of interesting information about butterflies in her information report. An information report includes a classification, and information about what something looks like, where it lives, what it eats, and other facts. Great work Sarah.

Thank you letters to the Life Education Caravan

We were lucky enough to have Corrine and Harold visit Sunnybrae for the last 2 weeks. We had two sessions in the Life Education caravan where we learnt about being a part of a team, how to know how someone is feeling, and what to do if we have problems.
The students really enjoyed the lessons and wrote thank you letters for Corrine or Harold.

Please come in and read our thank you letters in each child's Published Writing folder.

Our Hockey Skills in Term 2

We have been learning lots of Hockey skills this term.
Here is what we can do:

We can hold the stick with our Left hand on top, thumb pointing down, and our Right hand down near the end of the grip - Esther
We can hit the ball with the flat side of the stick - Cruze
We can 'travel' with the ball by pushing it with our stick carefully - Lochlin and Ria.

We can 'trap' or stop the ball by turning our stick and putting it in front of the ball - Mika.
We can pass the ball to a partner by standing side on to the ball, looking where we want the ball to go, then pushing it with our stick - Hannah and Charlotte.

What is it?

We have been learning how to create senses poems in our writing. Last week we made poems about our favourite food. We discussed what it sounded, looked, smelled, felt and tasted like.

I can hear water boiling.
I can smell rice cooking.
I can see some small things
I can feel something soft and hot.
I can taste something yummy.

What could it be?

Rice and chicken - Hiroto

I can hear chewing.
I can smell something sweet.
I can see the blue icing.
I can feel something soft.
I can taste something yum.

What could it be?
A cupcake - Cruze

Come and see all of our sense poems displayed in our classroom.

Hannah's happy kicking

Watch out - there's a fast-kicking shark in our midst! Oh wait, it's Hannah practising her straight legs and floppy feet kicking in the pool today. Hannah was confidently lowering herself into the water, holding onto the bar, and even putting her face in the water at times. We have been having regular lessons with the Swim Bus instructors - it is so much fun!

This was Hannah during our 2nd lesson.
Look how far you have come in such a short amount of time!
